The Tischband Leaf Video

Ask and you shall receive... well sometimes anyway!

Diane and Victats commented that they'd like a video on how to do the leaf from Ruth Scharf's Tischband (Tat-Along by Umi & Tsuru).  I hope you're still interested, ladies?

It only appears in this small format on the blog
but if you click on the links below it will take you to YouTube
where you can watch it in larger format.

On another note, I just saw Jane Eborall's latest post about HWT (hand-wound thread) and thought what a great idea!  The possibilities are endless!  Here is a simple, one-shuttle little motif made with three strands of sewing thread:

Motif no.16

Of course, you are aware of the three strands in the picots
but for the stitches, I think it makes a nice firm stitch that looks pretty good.

And here are the three colours I used.

I shall be experimenting some more with this idea.

Best wishes,

  1. Oh Frivole! I adore you!!!!! Thank you so much for making that video! I've been hesitating to make the leaf, tried it last weekend without much success and was going to give up. But now, thanks to you, I'm ready. You are a gem!!!!!!1

  2. I have an aunt who told me about visiting a yarn shop in Portland Oregon where you chose several single plys of whatever fiber you like and the they twist the plys into yarn for you...I wonder if that would be doable with thread?

    1. That's a cool thing! Wish I had a shop like that for my threads...

  3. I love using different threads together for unique looks. One thread that works very well for tatting on its own or in combination with a softer thread is a button/rug thread as it is quite strong and firm.
    Have fun experimenting.

  7. I am so excited that you created this video! Now to find time to tat... my daughter's production of Beauty and the Beast is this weekend, so I'll be busy helping behind the scenes. I will definitely be watching and tatting ASAP! Thank you so very much!

I've been tatting with sewing thread, and I have toyed with the idea of blending threads, but that's as far as I've gotten. Spring break starts in a week, and I have a feeling I'll be trying lots of new ideas out!

  9. Wow, it's like someone heard me thinking how I'd wished I could see the Tischband leaf in the making! I visited everyone who's tatting along and checking out the progress and thought I should give it a try but the leaf kinda stumped me. Thanks, Frivole, for being so thoughtful! I'd check out the video.

I love the idea of using sewing thread and your motif is lovely, when I g et time in will be trying it too, I have done some tatting with embroidery thread, but sewing thread would be stronger.

  13. P.S. How is it that you knew how to "turn" the work like you do? It's not the usual way, yet it's not really describable in a pattern. That was the most difficult part for me. Do you just "see" how the flow goes from experience?

    1. Hi Cindy,
Like you if was finding it hard to figure out the pattern so I just looked at the picture and went with how I thought I should, to achieve the look. Like for the picot at the tip, the pattern just said to make a picot and turn the work but I just couldn't make that work without the chain being all twisted so that's why I went with the paperclip idea. Perhaps the author had other ways of making the leaf but that's how I did it!
